Learn About the Asian (cat)

History

The Asian cat is also known as the Malayan. It is a cat breed that is a bit alike with the Burmese but comes in various colors and patterns. Longhaired Asians of all ranges are recognized as Tiffanies. During cat shows, Asians are assembled in the foreign section. Not much can be said with its origin except that this breed was developed in Britain. It started with Baroness Miranda von Kirchberg with a litter of kittens bred in 1981.

Description

The Asian cat is a medium-sized feline. It has a compact and muscular body, which is devoid of fat. It has a rounded and broad chest, and slim legs. They have medium length tails. They have a pleasantly rounded head with no flattened areas. There is a noticeable mark in profile. This gives the Asian cat a full-looking face.

This breed has a fine, satiny, and glossy short-haired coat. Asian cats are a mostly-even solid colored cat. They are classified in four varieties: The shaded Asian Burmilla, the Asian Tabby, the Asian Smoke and the Asian Self.

The pelage is solid in color but may vary in every cat. It can range from gray to black, red to golden brown, and dark brown to pale cinnamon. Varying forms among the different hues can happen as well. It may be marked with stripes and spots. Black and white lines run across the cheeks, going to the top of the head. Their ears are black with an inner gray area. There are golden cats found in China that closely resemble a large leopard cat with its leopard-like spots. The spotted fur is a recessive feature.

Temperament

All varieties of Asian cat are known to be people loving. They are lovable and very affectionate just like its originated sibling, the Burmese. They love to explore the house since they are inquisitive. It also has a strong will. It does not mind to travel in a cat carrier; in fact, it loves traveling in it. They are highly vocal and have incredibly loud voices. People who want to have this kind of cat should know that they want and need an owner that is willing to pay attention to it, play with it and give them frequent hugs. Again, these are characteristics similar to the Burmese. They familiarize people but can also be sociable towards strangers sometimes. They are energetic and playful like lap cats.

Health

They can live for a very long time as they are generally a healthy breed with very few health problems. One condition that is reported but rare is blistering of the skin. It has been observes in humans, dogs and Siamese cats. It may occur early from birth to six weeks. Most affected cats show shedding of the claws at five weeks from birth. If the sire of the kittens is affected, an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance can occur.

Care

To help keep the coat shiny and clean, you have to take your Asian cat and stroke it while rubbing it with either a chamois, glove or flannel cloth. Do not use your bare hands as it cannot give the same effect with wearing the mentioned equipment. This breed should be brushed at least once a week.
