Learn About the Cheetoh

History

The Cheetoh is one of the newest cat breeds. Cat breeder Carol Drymon created them in the early 2000s, she breed a male Ocicat with a female Bengal to create a very wild looking cat that looked somewhat like a miniature cheetah or leopard. The first litter of kittens had leopard-like coats and when full-grown were larger than both their parents. As the first litter was such a success, Mrs. Drymon, started to create a breeding program for her new breed of feline. With the help of other breeders, Mrs. Drymon was able to have a fully working breeding program three years after the first litter. One year later, the Cheetoh received recognition by the majority of North American cat clubs. The breed is not popular with many Ocicat and Bengal breeders as they feel it is a cross or a “mutt”.

Description

Body: SizeMedium to large.

Coat: Short, shiny, and thick.

Color: Black/brown spotted sienna (rust), black/brown spotted tan, black spotted smoke, black spotted silver, lynx pointed, and gold spotted snow.

Temperament

Intelligent, affectionate, extremely social, and gentle. In spite of their fierce look, Cheetohs are true lap cats with a sweet and docile temperament. Well-mannered, Cheetohs are usually good with children and other pets. The males exhibit definite maternal characteristics towards kittens and younger cats, never being hostile or antagonistic, a mannerism exclusive to the Ocicat and very rarely seen in other feline breeds. Cheetoh cats enjoy being with their humans, but they are not excessively demanding.

Health

The Cheetoh is a hardy breed with an average life span of around 13 years. They are susceptible to all the common feline ailments that affect all cats, but generally no more so than normal. As they are such a new breed of cats, potential genetic problems are yet to be seen. There have been some reports of the breed having luxating patella.

Care

Grooming: A Cheetoh’s coat requires minimal grooming due to it’s short fur length.
Feeding: Quality dry pet food, it is also good to include raw meat often in their diet because it makes for a naturally healthier Cheetoh. They can also have quite the appetite. Because of this, it is best to talk to a breeder about what to expect since feeding a Cheetoh can be considerably different than a traditional house cat.
