Learn About the German Rex

History

The first two German Rex deliberately bred were two Rex kittens from a 1957 litter of four, offspring of Lämmchen and the straight-coated son Fridolin she had with a stray black tom Blackieadopted by Scheuer-Karpin. Lämmchen died on December 19, 1964 or in 1967, indicating she had been very young when first sighted in 1947. According to experts, the first German Rex was a female feral, black-colored cat discovered shortly after the end of World War II. Dr. R. Scheuer-Karpin rescued her after she saw her wandering the gardens of the Hufeland Hospital amongst the ruins of war-torn East Berlin, and named her Lammchen (Lambkin).

Curly-coated kittenswere obtained through crosses with the Cornish Rex. This proved that the two breeds have the same gene responsible for the mutation. Both the F.I.Fe. and the S.C.F.F. recognize the German Rex. However, the C.F.A. does not distinguish it from the Cornish Rex and Devon Rex. The German Rex is very rare.

Description

The German Rex is a medium sized, muscular cat with slender legs of a medium length. The head is round with well developed cheeks and large, open, ears. The ears should be medium large. There would seem to be no restriction on coat color and pattern. This cat is all about the curly hair. The head is rounded and very broad between the ears. The cheeks are well-developed. The nose has a slight break at the base. The chin is massive and strong. This is clearly still a medium build cat of moderate type, which indicates that the original conformation has been preserved (c.f. the American Cornish Rex). The head should be rounded and the whiskers short and curly. The body should be medium in length. All colours of coat, but without white, are allowed. The body development is heavier than the Cornish Rex – more like the European Shorthairs.

Health

Though German Rex Breeds are normally healthy, they are susceptible to some hereditary diseases like Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. . They are susceptible to all the common feline ailments that affect all cats, but no more so than normal. As they are a rare breed of cats, they are not prone to any hereditary health issues. Like the other Rex breeds, this one doesn’t have any major health issues. Its biggest problem is that it lacks enough fur to absorb the oil that is secreted by the skin glands, so it can get a greasy appearance if it isn’t given a bath regularly.

Care

German Rex need little grooming, because their coat does not shed. Brushing them from time to time will keep their coat healthy and remove dead hairs.Because German Rex cats lack sufficient hair to absorb oil secretions, they easily greasy and need to be bathed frequently.
