Learn About the Havana Brown

History

The first Havana Brown cat breed was imported into North America in the mid-1950′s. The breed was accepted for registration by Cat Fanciers Association in 1959 and was granted Championship status in 1964. To ensure a wider gene pool, the cats can be outcrossed to unregistered black or blue domestic shorthairs, certain colors of Oriental Shorthairs, and chocolate-point or seal-point Siamese. In 1952 she had a litter with 3 black kittens, and was thrilled to discover a brown male kitten with similar shape to a Siamese with the same characteristically large ears and long tail. The kitten was named Elmtower Bronze Idol, and is generally acknowledged as the first recognized Havana from whom all Havanas in this country are descended, even though it was produced as a by-product of her breeding programme, rather than intentionally. The breeder was fascinated by this apparently new breed and kept him as an entire male, and he sired over twenty litters during the next couple of years. All Havana Browns have distinct heads that are longer than they are wide, with large rounded ears and brown whiskers. A medium-sized, slender but muscular body is typical of the breed.

Description

The Havana Brown is a medium-sized cat with oval-shaped green eyes, large ears, and a distinctive muzzle. Most commonly recognized for its rich brown coat, which is smooth and gleaming, the Havana Brown is also endowed with strong muscles. The head shape is unique in the cat fancy. It is longer than it is wide and narrows to a rounded, somewhat narrow muzzle with a pronounced break on both sides behind the whisker pads. The Havana is a striking cat with a rich mahogany coat showcasing brilliantly green eyes. The short, smooth rich red-brown coat reveals the graceful lines of this elegant cat while the expressive green eyes glow with intelligence. These gentle cats are playful members of the family and always curious about everything that is happening in their home.

Temperament

The Havana Brown is a graceful, affectionate and highly intelligent cat, with a big personality in a mid-sized package. It is similar in temperament to the Siamese, although it is less vocal and has a softer (and what many consider to be a more pleasing) voice. This gentle breed has a charming personality and they quietly demand attention and affection from their people. Interactive games that involve lots of activity and stimulation are a favorite pastime of this cat breed. This loving and sociable feline is very tactile, using his paws to touch or caress his human and to investigate things by poking and petting them with a delicate touch. These little imps have even been known to use a “hurt paw” technique just to get sympathy! Playful, athletic and a real people lover, this cat makes an entertaining and excellent companion.Havana Browns are wonderful cats with a very balanced nature: neither overly active nor too placid. They are intelligent and gentle, affectionate and self-confident. They are also known to be pretty adaptable, which makes them very good family pets.

Health

Havana Browns are generally healthy cats. Uncommonly, they have been reported to develop blastomycosis, which is an infections condition seen in some areas that have sandy soil close to large bodies of water.

Care

With the Havana being a shorthaired breed, grooming your cat will be an easy process. Once or twice a week brush him with a grooming glove to remove loose hairs and dander or even use a soft cloth to wipe him down. This quick regiment will ensure his coat stays sleek, smooth and shiny.
