Learn About the Peterbald

History

Like the Donskoy Sphynx, Peterbald cats are descendents of the Russian bald rescue kitten named Varya. Peterbald cats are also the offspring of the Donskoy Sphynx. The first offspring were born in early 1994.

This breed was created in St. Petersburg, Russia, by crossing a male Don Hairless (or Donosky) with an Oriental Shorthair female.

It is very important to note the Donskoy and Peterbalds are completely different breeds from the Sphynx (aka Canadian Sphynx). Some associations do call the Donskoys “Don Sphynx”, so it can be confusing.

Description

The bare essentials of the feline form are found in the elegant naked Peterbald. The incomparable cat from Russia with its graceful long body lines and engaging personality is as rare a gem as the famed Faberge eggs. The coat ranges from a totally smooth bald skin through a velour texture to a unique short brushy coat. The slim, elegant lines, the love and trust shining from its eyes and its hypnotizing movements make this cat a piece of living art that mesmerizes all who meet it. Gently taking your face in their slender paws, these bat-wing-eared cats steal your heart as they favor you with caresses and non-stop purrs.

Like its Oriental/Siamese forebearers, the Peterbald personality is energetic, outgoing, affectionate, and interactive. They enjoy being in the middle of everything.

You get a slim, elegant, long-bodied hairless cat with spidery legs and a cute whippy tail. You get a loving, playful cat known as the Peterbald.

Make no mistake, the Peterbald is NOT a “bald Oriental”, it is its own breed. The crossing of the two breeds contribute to the lovely attributes of this breed today, but leans more towards the foreign body type.

Temperament

Peterbalds make lively, intelligent, and affectionate companions. These are active cats whose grace and athleticism will never cease to amaze you.

The highly intelligent, affectionate Peterbald will entertain you with its playful antics. These are active cats whose grace and athleticism will never cease to amaze you as they perform an aerial ballet in their games.

Their light frame and long legs lend themselves well to quickly out-maneuvering and out-pacing their playmates. They can hit full speed in a flash and can turn sharp on a dime.

Health

Not all cat registries recognise the Peterbald and there are some concerns about the genetic health of the breed. Some people suspect that the dominant genetic mutation causing hairlessness in Peterbalds and Donskoys could cause feline ectodermal dysplasia in its homozygous form, causing problems including poor dentition and compromised ability to lactate.

Care

Like people, they need regular bathing to remove grease and dirt so it does not build up on their skin. Their bedding will also have to be washed as they will leave residue where they sleep. Ultra bald cats are oilier and need more frequent bathing than the other coat types.
