History

The Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound is one of four American foxhound breeds. It was cross bred with Bloodhounds in the 1700s, which created the breed known as the Black and Tan Coonhound. The state of Virginia selected this breed as the official breed representing the state in 1966. These dogs are known for their pleasant and loyal temperaments. They require ample exercise and are often easily bored. Foxhounds are known for finding ways to keep themselves entertained and may become destructive in the process. For this reason, these dogs should not be left indoors by themselves for extended periods. They require careful, patient training and plenty of socialization.

This breed is commonly thought to have descended from the hunting dogs brought into America by Robert Brooke in 1650. These hunting dogs were the ancestors of several varieties of American hounds. These hunting dogs were part of the Brooke family for more than 300 years. Another contributor to the creation of this breed was the cross breeding of some French Foxhounds that George Washington received as gifts from the Marquis de Lafayette, with some dogs descended from Brooke’s hunting dogs. This finally created the American foxhounds as seen today.

Description

Their most distinctive feature is their coat which is black and tan on a white base, short haired and fairly coarse. They are large dogs, growing to a height of 21-25 inches and can weigh between 65 and 75 pounds. Their head is long, their ears are droopy and large and sit framing their face. The Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound’s eyes are either hazel or brown and are fairly wide set, lending a friendly and intelligent look to their face.

Temperament

These dogs are known to have a pleasant attitude around their owners and even strangers. With the soft gentle nature of a coonhound and the energetic personality of a foxhound, they are the best of both worlds and can be a welcomed friend for a non hunting family or one of the best hunting partners to a hunter.

Health

They should not be left alone for very long since they will try to entertain themselves. They need to have plenty of exercise and have ample room to run.  If the diet is not restricted, the dogs puppies for sale tend to fatten with age and will slow down accordingly. All things considered, the dog is healthy and not plagued with genetic disorders that involve the hips and bones.

Care

Due to their energetic temperament they require a lot of exercise and room, if this is not provided they could become destructive in order to entertain themselves. This can also be prevented by a careful, patient training. They also need socialization outside. They are not suitable for apartment living because they are to energetic and need a lot of exercise to stay in shape.
